Wiper Democratic Movement (WDM) is facing tumultuous time with some key members including newest member Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana threatening to defect.

Kibwana, who recently ditched his Muungano Party to join Kalonzo-led Wiper, said the party is marred by cases of favouritism with some members being given preferential treatment.

Kibwana is set to face off with Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo junior who has also expressed interest in vying for the seat.

On Tuesday, a Wiper delegates meeting turned chaotic after some members accused the party leader Kalonzo Musyoka of favouritism and frustrating democracy.

Kalonzo is accused of favouring some candidates over others raising the question of whether the party nominations will be free and fair.

Beside the party politics, Kalonzo is also facing the challenge of convincing members of the Opposition coalition NASA that he is better placed to defeat President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 presidential elections.

Kalonzo is not the only principal who wants the NASA presidential ticket; others are ODM leader Raila Odinga, Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Musalia Mudavadi, and Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula.

There has been talk that Kalonzo may decide to run for the presidency on his party ticket should he fail to get the endorsement of his colleague in NASA, allegations that he has denied.

“I have sacrificed before and am ready to do it again to ensure Jubilee government goes home,” said Kalonzo in his speech at the NASA delegates meeting at Bomas of Kenya in January.

Within Wiper, there are forces that are also opposed to Kalonzo’s exit from NASA, among them the party chair and Kitui Senator David Musila.

Musila who is vying for Kitui Governorship seat has previously stated that the party would remain in NASA even if their leader Kalonzo Musyoka left.

Talks of revolt within the party have also emerged with some sources claiming Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama is among the people who are pushing for a Raila candidature, instead of the party leader.

Muthama has however denied the allegations.
