Deputy President William Ruto has claimed that National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga is planning to take over power through a coup.

DP William Ruto said that Raila Odinga who is alleged to have been behind the botched 1982 coup on former President Daniel Moi’s government, is already setting the stage for a coup to overthrow President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking at a rally in Kasarani on Sunday, DP Ruto said that NASA’ leader Raila Odinga has no intention of taking part in the October 17 elections, saying there are clear indications that their intention it to use force to be included in a coalition government, similar to that of 2007.

“Our competitors are calling for the removal of IEBC commissioners, cancellation of existing tenders with ballot paper printers Al Ghurair and electoral equipment supplier French firm Safran,” said William Ruto.

Ruto said that the government will ensure security before and after the elections, adding that they will not allow NASA to plunge the country into violence.

The deputy president’s remarks were in response to NASA leader Raila Odinga’s threats that they will not allow elections to be held without their demands being met.

Separately, DP Ruto posted on Twitter that the elections will be held on October 17 by IEBC, in accordance with the law.

“With a past of coups, violence & bloodshed no politician should unconstitutionally deny other Kenyans their Constitutional right to vote,” DP Ruto tweeted.

“If one man can be allowed to determine what is law, every man can. That means first chaos, then tyranny – Felix Frankfurter”

Raila, in his address at Jacaranda on Sunday, said that 12 IEBC commissioners including CEO Ezra Chiloba should resign, and a new ballot papers printer contacted to print materials for the October 17 presidential election.

The NASA leader hinted at launching anti-IEBC protests should the current IEBC commissioners refuse to vacate office.

“We want to tell Chiloba and his team that should they not resign, we will force them out like we did with his predecessor Issack Hassan.”

But in a rejoinder Garissa Township MP Aden Duale and Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said they will also rally their troops to counter any protests that NASA may be planning.

Sonko, in his address, said that he would deploy counter government askaris to stop NASA protests with Duale saying Jubilee supporters will also march to IEBC offices if NASA does so.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has in recent past rejected NASA’s demand for an overhaul of the IEBC, saying every political leaders should respect the independence of the institution.

Following the Supreme Court ruling, IEBC was ordered hold fresh presidential election within 60 days. IEBC has set the date for October 17, 2017.
