Uasin Gishu Woman Representative Gladys Shollei has made an about-turn in her support for Deputy President William Ruto.
Shollei, a known opponent of Ruto in Uasin Gishu, was last weekend seen in the company of Ruto-sponsored Inua Mama Women Empowerment Group during their tours of Garissa and Tana River Counties.
The Inua Mama group was officially launched last month in Malindi to rival the Embrace Women group which is seen as a pro-Raila political vehicle.
The Inua Mama group brings together pro-Ruto allies including Laikipia Woman Representative Cate Waruguru, her counterparts Purity Ngirici (Kirinyaga), Rahab Mukami (Nyeri), Joyce Korir (Bomet) and MPs Aisha Jumwa (Malindi), Alice Wahome (Kandara), Mary Waithera (Maragua), Nakuru Senator Susan Kihika and Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga among others.
The Embrace team, on the other hand, has former Nairobi Woman Representative and current Gender Chief Administrative Secretary Rachel Shebesh, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Homabay Women Representative Gladys Wanga and her counterparts Esther Passaris (Nairobi), Sabina Chege (Muranga), Rosa Buyu (Kisumu), MPs Naisula Lesuuda (Samburu West) and Mishi Mboko (Likoni), among others.
Shollei has for along shunned DP Ruto’s meetings in Uasin Gishu and pro-Ruto support groupings, saying she was “focused on development and not politics”.
“You will never see me in Tanga Tanga or Kieleweke movements’ functions. This is because I believe in development and not politics,” she once said.
But her latest move to join Team Inua Mama seems to have settled the debate on whose side the former Chief Registrar of the Judiciary is on.
In an interview on Citizen TV on Tuesday, Gladys Shollei moved to reinforce her support for Ruto calling on President Uhuru Kenyatta to honour his promise and support the DP in 2022 presidential elections.
“I support the deputy president and the work he is doing. I have tried to focus on development but the people asked me what is happening and I had to respond because they elected me and I have a responsibility to represent them.
“If you look at the DP he is cool and dealing with issues calmly. However, his opponents are trying to unfairly portray him as corrupt across media, fortunately, that has done him well, attracting sympathy,” said Gladys Shollei during the interview.
